A NEWBIE’S GUIDE TO OVERCOMING WRITER’S BLOCK.

As a newbie writer, you might have come across the dread writer’s block, a corner of darkness where the writer is dry of new stories no matter how he or she tries to create a write-up. Other times, the writer knows what stories to write, but finds it difficult to properly structure his or her great ideas in a comprehensible form or sentence. Such situations can be frustrating and depressing.

In those moments, one begins to question if writing is worth it. IT IS WORTH IT!

As a newbie writer myself, I have encountered dry writing spells for months at a time or twice in a week, depending on when the block decides to set it in, and I on the other hand was determined to set it outback.

The first thing I noticed was writer’s block usually set in when I read other people’s write up. There was usually the process of comparison before depression sets in, thoughts like “this write-up is so good, would I ever write like this?” take my whole heart and brain space. Somehow, I just lost the motivation to write and anytime I did manage to write, I had strong emotions of self-doubt or inadequacy.

However, understand that writing takes practice and more than enough reading and studying to become comfortable with your own writings. YES, THERE IS A THING LIKE GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR WRITINGS.

There are talented writers and there are skilled writers who painstakingly learned the rudiments of writing through rigorous learning and consistent efforts.

Talented writers would have to still learn and polish their skills too, so don’t for once think talent is a free pass to magically penned down sensible contents devoid of adequate work. Everyone learns and everybody must keep learning in order not to go rusty. So, friend, back to studying.

The second thing I noticed that caused writer’s block was having tied feelings to my writings. When you write only when you “feel the juices”, you are bound to encounter the dark corner sooner or later. Write when you feel like, write when you don’t feel like it because those days will come, and they last longer than the days you are in the mood to write.

Just like there are days you don’t feel like brushing your teeth but you still do, is the same way you must approach writing, don’t attach your feelings to it.

The third relatedness I observed was that not reading enough diverse articles led to writer’s block. Reading different articles encourages you to grasp various information on a variety of subjects. Access to varieties means you are not short of creating new articles. However, this advice might not work if you already have a niche you are focusing on, nevertheless, familiarizing yourself with various topics within that niche would enable you to gather or create a new approach or recreate articles with a fresh style.

This I know and I still practice, CONSISTENCY AND DETERMINATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN ANY PATH YOU CHOOSE.

Don’t be pressurized newbie, practice, practice, and practice. Download writing prompts to help you generate new topics and ideas, run with your storylines, and don’t be afraid if it seems you are “off-track”, except it is for a competition, then be worried.

Writer’s block is a phase, not a permanent place, MOVE!
